Studio

The first time I went into studio was with the song Voices, the second time was with my own song As We Are.

For me, singing inside a studio and outside a studio is completely different. In a studio I don’t feel that I am as free with my voice because it’s a recording that is going to last forever. Whereas when I sing at home, I feel completely free, there are no limitations, just my emotion and I playing together forming melodies.

I often find that in studio I make a lot more mistakes, I never really knew why, I thought it may have been because of nerves yet that was not the only reason why. When you are recording the singing part in a studio, the singer puts on headphones where the bars and the music are playing loudly and when singing, the voice is heard in the headphones in very high definition quality. I am only used to hearing myself sing acapella so this was very new to me – hearing the background music and my voice in such high quality sound in the headphones. I found that it impacted the natural quality in my voice that I am used to hearing - I could not sing the way that I would usually do. The solution to this was to only cover one ear with the headphones so that I could still hear the music as well as my natural voice. This really made a big improvement in the recordings.

I have learned to let go, to feel less intimidated in studio and to be more relaxed. It has really been an amazing experience. I feel so grateful and privileged to have had the opportunity to experience this and to have worked with such amazing artists, sound engineers and producers. Thank you for your advice and all the help you have given me
