AS WE ARE | Turning it into a Song

Franklin Esau (my CMD mentor) who had invited me to feature in his own song VOICES asked me if I wanted to write my own song. He gave me a topic of what the song could be about which was: being beautiful as you are. The poem that I had been working on in the Hottentot Mountains instantly popped into my head. This was EXACTLY what my poem was about. I started incorporating my poem into the lyrics....

I took the drafts to my Vocal Coach, Tina Schouw, and together we started working on writing the song. We came up with many drafts so that we had an idea where we wanted the song to lead to – kind of like grounding lyrics. Whenever we came up with new lines or put in different words in the lyrics it always happened that the next time we saw each other, we would change these as they didn’t feel right. When there is a line that you write in the song and it doesn’t immediately say “YES” in your head, then it’s probably because it’s not “IT.” Tina and I had lots of these moments. This was all part of the process - my song wouldn’t be where it is today if it wasn’t for those moments.
